For this assingment, we had to take a few photographs of anything that we like that would
be relevant for a magazine of our choice. We then had to choose our final photography image that we wanted to display.
To help us have an idea of what we wanted our images to look like, we were able to experiment using different types of lighting such as:
- Light Painting where the background is dark and you use a small light to draw anything that you like for a few seconds, until you see your final image.
- Gel Lighting filters which come in different colours such as; Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple and it makes your photography more effective.
- Soft Lighting and Hard Lighting.
Music is something that I'm quite passionate about and so I wanted this magazine cover to be suitable for young people or anyone that has a passion for music. So I went onto the Internet and I researched a few images that were to do with music and people performing. Once I had a clear idea of what kind of music photography I wanted to do, I then created a mind map on different ideas that I could use when creating my image. My mind map of ideas included the location that I was going to take these images, who I needed to be a model for my images, the props that I was going to need and the lighting that I was going to need.
Once I done that, I created a mood board which included a few images to do with what I wanted to have in my final image. My mood board has images of a microphone and a microphone stand, with a few people looking like they are performing individually. All of these images that I chose have bright Gel Lights in the background which make the person performing and the microphone stand out.
I chose to use these images as I wanted my photography to be for a music magazine and I wanted to use the Gel Lighting technique. I thought it would be a good idea to take my images in the TV Studio at City Of Westminster College because I was able to have a dark background and I could use the light stands and the Gel Lights to create the image that I wanted.
I was going to use 2 models for my final image, but then I decided to use one male model as I thought that you'll be able to focus on that one person in the image. I also captured a Medium- Long Shot of the model holding a microphone with a microphone stand next to it. I wanted to capture the shadow of the model so that the image could have more of an effect to it.
While I was taking these images of the model, I was able to communicate with them well and direct them to how I wanted them to stand and what I wanted them to be seen doing with the props that was used.
Overall, I really liked my final image as I liked how the model was positioned to one side and on the other side of the image was the models shadow. I also liked the way the colours blended together. If I was to do this project again, I would make sure that I gave myself enough time to take these camera shots and then edit them properly. I could also add the Light Painting Technique to make my image look more effective.
Based on the feedback that I was given, I would also use different colours so that my image could stand out more.
